Business plan

If you want to convince banks and investors of your business idea, you need a business plan. Your business plan is like your company’s business card.

It will also be a key planning and control tool for you to progress the set-up and subsequent development of your business. The plan should clearly highlight opportunities as well as risks.

Drawing up a business plan - 4 tips

1. Give yourself enough time

It may take several months for you to complete your business plan: market research, financial plans, grant applications, the search for suppliers and documentation all take time.

2. Find clear words

Hone your idea until you can express it clearly and precisely in a few sentences, however complex it may be. Use feedback from friends who see your project from the outside.

3. Be realistic

Be honest with yourself and your financial backers: Is your business idea realistic? Do you know the market and the opportunities you have? Do you have sufficient equity and reserves for contingencies?

4. Make use of professional help

When drafting your business plan, use the advice offered by the STARTERCENTER NRW and the expertise of external consultants. Also make use of templates and advisory committees.

„I can only recommend people wanting to start up a business to begin by drafting a sound business plan, and to do it themselves. It goes down well with banks when you have thought about things yourself and given careful consideration to issues: What does the idea look like? Which are my target groups and how will I reach them? Where are my income opportunities?“

Tip: Tools and resources

For your first personal consultation at your STARTERCENTER NRW, it is very helpful to be able to present an initial written version of a business plan. There are various free support services available for this:

  • The federal start-up platform provides extensive materials to help you create your business plan and discuss it with your advisors at the STARTERCENTER NRW.
  • The Chambers of Industry and Commerce, as part of the STARTERCENTER NRW network, offer useful tools for business planning through a joint project called “Unternehmenswerkstatt Deutschland”.
